As you go further right into the periodic table, the metals have more stable properties than the ones in the previous columns. That pattern stops when you reach the metalloids. For the non-metals, you would start from the right and progress left, and that is a way of seeing how stable the non-metals get as you go further, until you reach the stair-step line.
