Experimentation in science is done following strict scientific protocols. A basic approach is to first form a hypothesis, which is simply a good guess of what will happen in the experiment. After the experiment you examines the data and compare them with the hypothesis. You then comment on how they may or may not match, and then you could publish the results.

It is important that the method of how you conducted the experiment and what that was used is included in the report, so that others might try to duplicate your results. If other scientists do the same experiment and get the same results as you did, your report is then strengthened, and it will therefor gain a higher value of credulity.
