You have to have writable DVD's in order to be able to record on to them; there is no way to get around that aspect of it. Regular DVD's play or allow access to what is stored on them; a write can record to a DVD-RW but can not record or store to a regular DVD.
I strip the audio from DVD with a DVD Audio Ripper,
Its definitely not a simple task. Really the only thing from the CD changer you could use is the Transport system and the buttons on the front. First, the laser from a CD player is of higher wavelength than that of a DVD player. This leads to higher resolution and the ability to read smaller pits on the surface of the discs. Second most DVDs (used for video) are dual layer which the CD player is not equipped to handle. Third, the DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter) of the CD is not set up to handle the data from a DVD only from a CD. While it could be done - you could take the 300 CD changer mechanism and couple it to a DVD player (ie you would need to canabalise both a CD player and a DVD player) it would not be easy.
And HD dvd is a dvd that has it's movie or TV show in HD format, compatible with any plasma or HDTV. Similar to a Blu-Ray dvd, it can store huge amount a data.
