To indicate the direction in which the map is drawn to. Without the compass rose, you would not know which direction you are heading to, neither would you be able to navigate your way out with a compass in your hand.

The compass essentially allowed for the age of exploration to happen. It has made sea travel possible all year long and in fog and clouds. Its so important that in old times, the punishment for tampering with a compass was having your hand pinned to the mast with a dagger. Ships did't have to winter in port.

The earth has it's own magnetism. The poles are roughly in alignment with the axial poles. As unlike poles of any magnet will attract each other, a man made magnet will also align itself with the earths magnetic poles.

So the magnet in a compass will allow it to be used for navigation, by finding out which direction the poles are, all the other points of the compass can be worked out.
