Assuming you mean Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki region (there is another one in the Marlborough Sounds) . This last erupted as a pair of eruptions about 550 and 600 years ago. Human footprints have been found preserved in the ash deposits on the adjacent Motutapu Island. Rangitoto is a classic shield volcano, with a widespread, shallow angle, lava flow. Though there are some scoria cones.
