Calmly explain the definition of a theory i.e. a hypothesis which has been supported by much and varied evidence and has made tested and confirmed predictions.
However, those who make this claim often use it to justify personal opinion, so a logical explanation won't do much to change their mind (if they even listen to it at all).

∙ 9y agoI would tell such people to pick up a dictionary and educate themselves about the definition of the word "theory". They don't get it yet. There are two distinct meanings and one of them is the scientific meaning. They are all hung up on the mainstream meaning and they are incorrect in applying it to scientific theory. Furthermore, to say there "no scientific evidence" backing up Big Bang Cosmology is like saying there is no scientific evidence to support Newton's Theory of Gravity. Both of these ideas make specific predictions of what we would observe if we did certain tests, rigourous experiments have been done to teset predictions from both, and the predictions made by both have proven to be true.

The best way to respond to this is to explain that there is the fact of evolution and the theory of evolution. Evolution is defined as genetic change within a population. This is an easily observable fact both in nature and the laboratory. The theory of evolution is an explanation for the diversity of life on earth based on the observable facts that evolution does indeed occur. It is exactly the same situation with gravity. Gravity is a fact, an easily observed physical phenomenon. But there is also a Theory of Gravitation, an explanation for the phenomenon itself and how it works. That there is a theory for both evolution and gravity does not mean the facts of evolution and gravity are any less true.
