A wooden house is a better insulator especially when using it for a pet. Plastic allows too much heat to enter during summer months where wood allows for shade and protection for some of the heat.
The air entrained in the snow acts as a fairly good insulator in igloos and the snow caves used by mountaineers.

What is a good insulator for a igloo project
One type of house built in cold regions is the igloo which is usually built with snow and ice. Another type built to withstand cold climates, are houses with steep-pitched roofs, good insulation, and double glazed or thermal windows.
A blanket keeps you warm by containing your body heat, under the blanket, so that your body temperature stays comfortable. It also keeps the colder air from contacting your skin. A blanket creates a air barrier around you and insulates that area. Just like wool socks and thermal underwear, it keeps wind from removing the heat that is trapped there. Wind removes heat faster than most things. To see an example, take an ice cube and place it on a plate, take another and place it on a plate in front of a fan. The ice cube in front of the fan will melt faster because the ambient air is removed. A tent or an igloo serve the same purpose by creating a still air mass.

An igloo. Although snow is cold it gives off heat when inclosed in an igloo. That is how the eskimos were able to stay warm during the harsh winters.

There weren't igloos. It was a dome shaped house made from sod, wooden beams, and rocks.
Igloo is the house for Eskimos.
Igloo.
Snow insulates the roof, keep the heat from radiating out. That's why an igloo works.
