A scientific theory is just a hypothesis that has stood the test of repeated experimentation.

A hypothesis is a wild guess, and the more fundamental you want to make your

hypothesis, the more wild it becomes.

A scientific theory can be invalidated by a single experiment, but can never be

proved no matter how many experiments are conducted.

It's often pointed out that one of the most important jobs of real scientists is to

work to DIS-prove the current theories. The more that competent scientists are

unable to disprove a theory, the more trustworthy and plausible the theory

becomes.

Other term for hypothesis?

A hypothesis is a statement made for the sake of argument. It becomes a theory when it has been independantly verified. It is not a fact or truth. A theory only has to have one contradictory example to lose its status as a theory.

Why is a hypothesis not just a guess?

Unlike a wild guess, a hypothesis is based on observations and it must be testable......:-) answer by hismejohn

How is Darwin's theory called a theory?

His first paper was titled:- 'On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection' His book was titled 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life' (usually abbreviated to On the Origin of Species). In these publications he set described things/features that could be seen in the biological world and presented a process by which these could arise over time, with evidence to support these proposals. As such his publications conform to the scientific method and may be called a theory. His proposals are now well accepted as being a correct/true description about how the variety of life as we know it came to be on our planet and form the basis of modern evolutionary theory. *In scientific terminology, a theory is a proposal/explanation with evidence that could be defended (a fossil record, the different bird specie variations, etc.) and an idea that can be used to predict further developments; in this case, that there have been/are/will be major changes to an organism's DNA/RNA over time as it adapts to its environment, which can be proven with a decent microscope and some bacteria, and common acceptance in the scientific community (tick this box).

What is it about science as a way of knowing that makes it self-correcting?

Science is based on observation, rather than on dogma. Everything in science is constantly being tested. Scientists are trained to take nothing on faith, but to observe as much as they can. Scientists know that they may observe something that other scientists missed. So scientific error (or fraud) does get detected.

How is a theory different from a guess?

A "theory", as the word is used in science, is not just a guess; it's refers to a system of thought that is well-established, and confirmed by numerous experiments. For example, the "Theory of Relativity" or the "Big Bang theory" are more than wild guesses; there are strong reasons to believe in each of them, including the results of numerous experiments. For more information, read the article on "Scientific theory", in the Wikipedia - or at least the introductory paragraphs.

How do the terms 'hypothesis' and 'theory' differ from the public and from a biologist's approach?

A hypothesis is a good acurate guess based on the facts and evidence, while a theory is just a wild guess. But a hypothesis and theory's are both made by scientists with more knowledge than a regular, ordinary person.

Why is a theory called a theory?

Natural selection is a theory because it had been tested and verified countless times by experimentation and observation. It made accurate predictions and can be modelled mathematically. It is thus a scientific theory. If you're wondering by any chance what a theory is in science, it is exactly what I described what natural selection went through. A scientific theory is a tested and verified hypothesis supported by evidence that explains a phenomenon we observe. Some examples of scientific theories are the theory of gravity, the theory of relativity, the germ theory of disease, theory of quantum mechanics, so on. Here is what a theory is NOT. It is NOT a wild guess, opinion or speculation, unsupported by evidence, as the everyday term of theory would me. A theory in science is a very high status. It means the theory had passed through rigorious tests and were peer reviewed by many other scientists and accepted.
