Biological classification (Taxonomy) categorises living organisms into groups of similar organisms. So one major group, animals, all belong to the 'Kingdom' Animalia. Animalia itself is broken down into groups of similar organisms, then each group is broken down further - so as an example, Animalia contains the 'Classes' Mammalia (mammals) Aves (birds), and others, and all these are broken down into 'Orders'.

'Primates' is one such order of Mammalia, and this contains monkeys, apes, and humans. Therefore all three of those can be reffered to as 'primates', in the same way as we can call them 'mammals' and 'animals'.
