Lactometer is used t measure the purity of milk
Lactometer is an instrument invented by Mr. Dicas, of Liverpool, for the purpose of ascertaining the different qualities of milk from its specific gravity compared with water. On this subject Dr. Ure observes, that it is not possible to infer the quality of milk from the indications merely of a specific gravity instrument, because both cream and water affect the specific gravity of milk alike. "We must first use as a lactometer a graduated glass tube, in which we note the thickness of the stratum of cream afforded, after a proper interval, from a determinate column of new milk; we then apply to the skimmed milk a hydrometric instrument, from which we learn the relative proportions of curd and whey. Thus the combination of the two instruments furnishes a tolerably exact lactometer."

Mass is measured against a standard by using an instrument called a balance.

The weight of eggs, water and milk are measured in ounces or cups. The volume of water, eggs, and milk is measured as a liquid. The volume of butter is measured as a solid.
It is a "sphygmomanometer." I'm not joking.
The wind direction is measured with wind vanes or wind socks. The wind speed is measured with an anemometer.
A Lactometer is a little glass instrument that tests the purity of milk based on density/buoyancy and works on the principle of the specific gravity of milk.
milk represents purity
A Lactometer is a little glass instrument that tests the purity of milk based on density/buoyancy and works on the principle of the specific gravity of milk. It is based on the Archemedes' principle. When we put loctometer inside the liquid it experience buoyant force(weight of displace fluid). Hence measure relative density in the given scale of loctometer. Lower the density of liquid farther, the loctometer will sink.
Milk is a liquid. liquids are measured in liters.
Milk is measured by volume. It is not measured by weight.

Milk was measured in gallons before it was measured in liters. There are also other archaic units of volume, such as the hogshead.

An instrument in which the present value of the quantity being measured is indicated is called an indicating instrument.
