Oscar Hertwig was a German Professor of Zoology, who was the elder brother of Richard Hertwig, who was also a zoologist. Born on 21st April 1849 in Friedberg, he was an exponent of the Dawin / Wallace Theory of Evolution (although he refuted Darwin's belief in chance in the process), as well as being a leader in the field of causal and comparative animal-developmental history. He discovered how sea urchins are fertilised, recognised the role of the cell nucleus during inheritance, and also chromasome reduction during meiosis. In 1876, he discovered that fertilisation involves the penetration of a spermatozoan into an egg cell. Oscar became Professor of Anatomy at Berlin University in 1888; he died in Berlin on 25th October 1922, at the age of 73. He is generally regarded as having been one of the great names in the field of zoology and comparative physiology, along with Konrad Lorenz, Nicholas Tinbergen, Darwin, Alfred Russell Wallace, Ernest Naylor and Elfed Morgan.

His rejection of the theory that bacteria cause disease and of Ignaz Semmelweishttp://wiki.answers.com/topic/ignaz-semmelweis's advocacy of antisepsis delayed the use of antiseptics. Virchow also founded two anthropological societies and accompanied Heinrich chliemannhttp://wiki.answers.com/topic/heinrich-schliemann to Troy (1879) and Egypt (1888).
