A pure substance is something that is only composed of one component. So, everything in the Periodic Table as well as every single molecule can be considered a pure substance.

For example, a block of sulfur is a pure substance because it's made entirely out of sulfur. Another example would be a cup of pure acetone because there is only acetone inside the cup.

So, salt water is not a pure substance because it's water mixed with salt.
