(mechanical) * Other means of weathering include the expansion of crystallizing salts that have been taken in by a rock surface , expansion due to the absorption of water, and hydraulic action from crashing waves on seashore rock formations.

Freeze-thaw, Onion-skin, Biological and Chemical.

Freeze thaw is when there is a crack in a rock, and water gets into it. at night the water freezes and expands making the crack larger. This repeats, eventually crumbling the rock. onion skin is where in the heat of the day, rocks expand. then at night they contract again. eventually this causes fragments like a skin to fall of. Biological is where animals or plant roots burrow into the rock, weakening it. Chemical is when a rock, such as limestone reacts with the rain and so is eroded.

1. Acid Reactions

2. Hydration

If the original mineral had a chemical formula of X, the new suite of minerals will have chemical formulas of X . nH2O. For example, anhydrite (CaSO4) exposed to water hydrates into gypsum (CaSO4 . 2H2O).

3. Oxidation

Oxidation is where oxygen from the atmosphere reacts with metal elements in the rocks to form oxides. The most common metal involved is iron. It reacts with oxygen to form iron oxide minerals such as hematite (Fe2O3) or, if water is present which it often is, hydration occurs in conjunction to form limonite (Fe2O3 . nH2O). Oxide minerals tend to be structurally weak and easily crumbled.
