Many of Andreas Vesalius' discoveries were about disproving the views of the surgeon Galen which were the common view of human anatomy from 200 AD through the 16thC.

- He disproved the belief held then that men had one fewer rib than women.
- He described the four chambers of the hearts (two atria and two chambers)
- He proved that the septum between the right and left atriums was not porous as previously believed.
- He discovered the mitral valve in the heart.
- He described and gave illustrations many parts of the brain for the first time such as the corpus callosum and the thalamus.

These and many more discoveries were published in his 1543 book, De humani corporis fabrica (On the fabric of the human body) published in 1543
