Measurements of Safety in the workplace include:

  • injury rate (person-hours worked)
  • number of days away from work
  • ratio of days away from work per hours worked
  • number of injury cases involving days away from work
  • ratio of cases involving days away from work per hours worked
  • number of training classes held
  • number of employees trained
  • number of safety topic for which training was provided
  • number of safety suggestion received and acted upon
  • number of people observed properly using safety equipment

Safety measures in the sense of things to do to improve or maintain safety are various and numerous and depend strongly on the nature of the work performed in the workplace and how well the work and the workplace are designed. Someone who is completely new to workplace safety should get training and education on the subject, in person or online.

Don't focus solely on regulatory compliance, unless your management requires such a narrow and unproductive focus, and don't be a safety cop. Be an adviser to managers and employees, and encourage the formation of committees to review problems and develop solutions.

Remember that the responsibility for safety performance belongs to line management, just as quality and productivity do.

Safety is one of the most important things to consider when handling chemicals. To ensure the safety of all workers:-all chemicals should be properly labelled with the WHIMIS labels and kept in suitable containers (i.e. not water bottles or anything that might resemble a food container).

-long hair should be tied back

-proper shoes should be worn at all times (no sandals).

-long sleeves should be pushed back

-gloves, glasses, and a lab apron or coat should be worn

-when diluting an acid, acids should always be poured into water, never water into acid.

-never eat or drink in the lab

-never taste anything in the lab

-when observing scent, do not smell substances directly but instead waft them towards your nose.
