Independent is the variable that doesn't depend on anything to do it's job.

Dependent is the variable that depends on the independent variable.

Ex.:

Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers.

Group A gets the drink and Group B doesn't.

-The special juice is the independent variable because it doesn't depend on anything else to function

- The productivity or workers is the dependent variable because it depends on the special juice.
