An atom is made up of a central nucleus (in which are to be found neutrally charged neutrons and positively charged positrons) which bears a positive charge. Surrounding this nucleus are shells in which may be found electrons (which are negatively charged). The number of electrons matches the number of positrons and the number of positrons determines the element to which the atom belongs.
