if you mean the equation E = mc 2 (squared), it has no real practical benefits at the present for the average person. It describes a relationship between matter and energy in terms of how much energy can result when converting something completely to energy or how much energy is used up to create matter.

It is not something we are able to do at the present time. What it does do is give scientists a better understanding of how are universe works. Although it is not possible to prove that the equation is correct, the equation does seem to work when used by physicists and other scientists when studying the world around us and in developing other formulas and equations.

Matter is "stuff". It could be wood, oil, stone, metal, cotton, food, air, gas, dirt, water, anything. Energy could be heat, light, magnetism, gravity, electricity, kinetic energy (something moving or falling), potential energy (something ready to move by itself but being held back as when holding something in your hand and letting it go so it drops becoming kinetic energy).

We are able to partially convert matter to energy. One way is to burn something. We burn wood to generate heat and light energy. It is not a complete conversion as we have ashes left over that no longer burn the same way. We burn a candle to create light and some heat energy and some left over gasses that do not burn. When we burn gasoline in an engine (as in an automobile), the heat is converted to kinetic energy (the car moves). We can also explode things to release a large amount of energy at once (and some by products that no longer burn).

We generally are not able to convert energy back into matter although it does occur in nature as when plants use sunlight (together with other materials) to grow. We know this because the amount of plant is greater than the amount of material used for the plant and the only other requirement for the plant to grow is light.
