Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the second hottest and second smallest planet in the Solar System. One of Mercury's major features is the Caloris Basin. This large basin (or maria) has a diameter of 1300 kilometers. The Caloris Basin was probably caused by a large impact in the days of the early Solar System. One special feature about Mercury is that it has no plate tectonics. Also, Mercury possesses a thin atmosphere that consists of atoms blown from the surface by solar winds blasted through space by the Sun.
