Base cabinets usually fall on the 3" dimension. 3" 6" 9" 12" 15" 18" 21" 24" 27" 30" 33" 36" 39" 42" by 24" deep by 34.5" high (most home building supply mega-stores (Home Depot, Lowes, etc) will have the 12, 18, 21, 24, 36, and 42" sizes). Wall cabinets on the other hand come in all the lengths listed before and are generally 12" deep by 30" high, unless it is a bridge unit which will make it somewhere between 14" and 17" high with the standard 12" depth.
Note: bridge units are usually used for over the refrigerator, or stove / range / cook top, and sink, but can be used anywhere that it would be nicer to have a greater amount of space between the counter top and the upper cabinets.
