Molds and casts are a third method of fossil preservation. Molds form after hard parts have been buried in mud, clay, or other material that turns to stone. Later, water dissolves the buried hard part, leaving only an impression or mold of the original. When this mold is filled with new material, a cast of the original is formed.

One form of fossil forms when an organism dies and its body is covered by layers of sediment. As time passes, the organism itself, particularly when composed primarily of softer materials, is eroded and carried away, leaving a negative imprint of its body. This type of fossil is called a mold or cast.

Fossil casts form in several different ways. When a snail shell is embedded in sand or mud, mineral deposition (mostly calcium carbonate) and pressure convert the sand to sandstone, and the mud to shale or to limestone if calcium carbonate content is high. The soft body of the snail quickly decays (bacterial action, etc.) and the space within the shell is filled with sediment. If the shell later erodes away, the resulting cast is of the interior or the shell. If the shell and contents dissolve away soon enough to leave a space, again, water-borne sediments fill the space, creating a cast. A analogy is at Pompeii, where the Roman town was covered in volcanic ash and pumice. Archaeologists poured plaster of Paris into cavities, which were left when the buried bodies of Roman dissolved away. The casts of Roman citizens can be observed today.

a cast fossil is formed when minerals replace animal tissue. tese minerals from a fossil that looks just like the original. the cast fossil is a three-dimensional image of the organism made of different material. while the mold fossil is an impression of the organism.

What are cast fossils?

One form of fossil forms when an organism dies and its body is covered by layers of sediment. As time passes, the organism itself, particularly when composed primarily of softer materials, is eroded and carried away, leaving a negative imprint of its body. This type of fossil is called a mold. A cast fossil forms when a mold fossil is filled with some form of mineral, usually through the seepage of water depositing the minerals within the mold. In time, the mold is filled and the materials deposited harden, creating a replica of the original fossil. This is called a cast fossil.

What are mold and cast fossils?

A fossil mold is formed by the impression left in rock by the remains of an organism. A cast fossil occurs when the mold is filled in by precipitating minerals.

What is in fossil fuel and released in the form of kinetic energy when burned?

The heat is produced by the formation of chemical bonds between carbon and oxygen, and between hydrogen and oxygen. So CO2 and water are the necessary products when fossil fuel is burned, without which there would be no heat.
