The two most common units to measure atmospheric (barometric) pressure, is either the height of a column of mercury a complete vacuum could suck up, which is on average at sea level 760 mm or 29.92", or in millibars (mBar), which is a metric unit equal to 1/100 Pascals. For the air pressure of, say an inflated tire, the two common units are pounds per square inch (psi) and kiloPascals

(kPa).

These are usually "gauge pressures", meaning that the atmospheric pressure has already been subtracted. For example, a car tire may be rated for 35 psig.

The absolute pressure of the air in the tire would probably be closer to 50 psi, but atmospheric pressure, about 14.7 psi, is subtracted. That is why a tire gauge shows zero pressure when not connected, even though atmospheric pressure is always being exerted on it, as it is on us all. Of course, to measure gauge pressure of a partial vacuum (less than atmospheric pressure)

, the gauge would have to be able to give negative readings.

There are dozens of ways of expressing air pressure, usually grouped around the length of a column of mercury, or some other liquid, that could be pulled by a vacuum, or simply in units of Force per unit area. However, sometimes even these units aren't obvious. For example, a "Torr", usually seen on vacuum gauges, is actually just a mm of mercury, mentioned at the beginning. A really good vacuum might be measured in "microns" (micrometers) of mercury.
