Darwin was prompted to write his famous book by another naturalist called Alfred Russel Wallace.
Wallace was a naturalist collecting in the East Indies. He had developed a theory essentially the same as Darwin's, and in 1858 he wrote to Darwin, asking him to have it published if he thought it worthwhile.
At this point Darwin had been working on his ideas for 20 years, and had written an outline of his theory in 1844. However he was reluctant to publish it because of the controversy it would cause.
On receiving Wallace's letter, he took the advice of his friend the geologist Charles Lyell and submitted both Wallace's essay and an extract from his own 1844 essay to the Linnaean Society in London in 1858.
He then set to work on his book, On the origin of species, which he published in 1859.

Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel discovered /invented natural selection.
Charles Darwin is known for his theory of evolution through natural selection, which suggests that species evolve over time through the process of adapting to their environment. He also proposed the theory of common descent, stating that all living organisms are related and share a common ancestor. Additionally, Darwin's theory of sexual selection explains how certain traits can be favored in mate selection and lead to evolutionary changes.
