Darwin was the naturalist aboard the Beagle and became somewhat feted by the scientific community on publication of his report of the voyage; Darwin was a good writer. Darwin lacked confidence as he hadn't had formal training as a scientist (he'd studied theology at university) and to feel more secure in his new career he studied barnicles - he became an authority on barnicles as a result.

The key event in Darwin's life which made him famous outside of the scientific world was the publication of On the Origin of the Species in 1959. The book was a Victorian bestseller and it sold out in one day and Darwin became the most celebrated naturalist of his age.
