Enrico Fermi invented (with the rest of his team, him being the leader) the first ever nuclear reaction chain which devoloped a bomb that could destroy an entire city.

Above is the original answer. However, I am adding a "few" words from my personal point of view on the subject: Fermi contributed plenty towards the potential demolition of entire existing/natural/perfect in its own creation fragile thing called life. I admire his brain power and passion in a complicated field of physics he chose to study and became obsessed with. I hate to admit that I think his drive, desire, passion was misused by him, without him knowing what kind of consequences his work and research will eventually have. Radioactivity is a poison to all natural things. Including us. All living creatures: animals, people, plants, air. water.... Naturally accruing radiation from the sun, space etc always were and are accruing in doses that would never hurt anyone or anything. But it takes one great and powerful brain power (which Mr. Fermi had plenty of) to plant the seed for the idea to be be taken way too far and in time become the source of destruction to all existing form of life when misused.
