He did not invent the telescope. He held a patent (Oct 1899) on improvements to the bicycle frame, specifically to allow it to come apart for storage. I do not know if he held any patents for improvements to the telescope.

The guy who invented the bicycle frame was the same guy who invented the bicycle, you just can't have one w/o the other. While there area several different bids on who actually invented the bicycle, Isaac R Johnson isn't listed as one of them. With that said, Johnson may well have patented some sort of variation or improvement on the bicycle, in which case he probably did it for the same reasons people always have invented things - to make existing things better, or more useful in some way or another, or to introduce new things completely, or simply because they think they'll sell and make some money for them.
