Added: Increasing the Kcal ( Kilo calories) of a horses feed when the weather drops below freezing is a good idea as the horse has to expend more energy to maintain its body temperature. Feeding an increased anount of GOOD quality hay or adding a little extra grain will meet the horses needs. Just monitor the horses weight by feeling for the ribs. You should be able to BARELY palpate the last 2-3 ribs on a horse with good weight. This means you can not see the ribs, but if you push very firmly on the horses side you can feel them. If you easily feel them or more than the last 2-3 the horse needs more feed. If you can't find any ribs at all, the horse is to fat. Usually their regular feed, they just wear a blanket outside when it gets cold if they don't get their winter coat of longer hair. The temperature does not usually cause a horse's feed to be changed, but they may get more hay because grass is harder to get when there is snow.
