In my personal opinion, Darwin was a genius far ahead of his time. He helped people better understand the world, and that is admirable. Don't listen to the religious loonies who put him down because he threatens their beliefs. Creationists think that Darwin was an atheist trying to prove that life happened on its own, and that men descended from monkeys. Darwin did not actually believe it, but atheists who do believe it probably see Darwin in the same way as the creationists, although they are more kindly disposed toward him. I agree with the above answer which is a balanced view of Charles Darwin.

Darwin is the father of evolution. He was a scientist. He was also a writer. He popularized the idea of natural selection. He also opposed slavery.

Darwin went to Edinburgh University in October 1825 to study medicine.

Darwin's view on religion has been the subject of a lot of interest. he attended a Church of England school. He even studied theology.

Darwin wrote 3 books. Most famous was his Origin of Species. He also wrote Descent of Man and The Voyage of the Beagle.

It's quite unusual to be asked for a personal opinion on wikianswers!

Darwin is considered one of the most important scientists in history; it can be argued that Biology, as a science, didn't really exist before Darwin and his work had enormous influence on geology and theology. The theory of evolution informed genetics and engineering.

His most famous book On the Origin of Species, is one of the few, in fact I would argue the only seminal scientific book that is readable by a lay person.

On a more human level, Darwin was widely reported to be a kind, nice man. He doted on his children - the death of his daughter devastated him. He was modest about his theory and devoted a chapter of Origin of Species to problems with the theory.

Whether he was the greatest British scientist is more arguable; Newton makes a strong claim, but Newton appears to have claimed some other scientists' work as his own, he was also a pretty unpleasant person.

So, my personal opinion - Darwin is one of the people in history I would have liked to have met. The closest I've got is to shake hands with a lady who's grandmother had tea with Darwin.
