The permissible exposure limit for respirable dust containing crystalline silica is 0.05 mg/m3 as recommended by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). This limit is intended to protect workers from the health risks associated with exposure to crystalline silica, which can cause silicosis and other respiratory diseases.
Effects on Humans: Most vegetable oil mists are biologically inert and are therefore considered to be nuisance particulates. Vegetable oil mists seem to have little adverse effect on the lungs and do not produce significant organic disease or toxic effects when exposures are kept under reasonable control [ACGIH 1991]. Oils from certain plants such as castor bean, sesame, acacia, and cashew nut have caused occupational dermatitis and respiratory irritation. Exposure to acacia gum oil has been associated with occupational asthma and dermatitis [ACGIH 1991]. Ingestion of cottonseed oil that also contained some camphorated oils has caused clinical toxicity, coma, and death [ACGIH 1991]. Acute exposure: No signs or symptoms of acute exposure to vegetable oil mist have been reported in humans. However, oils from certain plants (e.g. castor bean, sesame, acacia, and cashew nut) have reportedly caused occupational dermatitis and respiratory irritation [ACGIH 1991].
OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits are legally enforceable limits and are updated very rarely because of the bureaucratic difficulties of doing so. Consequently, with a few exceptions, they are based upon science and opinion that was current in 1968. The ACGIH Threshold Limit Values are recommendations made by a committee of experts but have no force of law behind them. However, they are frequently reviewed and can be updated in one or two years, so are based on more current science and more recent expert opinion.
The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) reduced the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for hydrogen sulfide from 15 parts per million (ppm) to 10 ppm in 2010. This change was made to better protect workers from the health hazards associated with hydrogen sulfide exposure. Compliance with this lower TLV helps ensure safer working conditions and reduce the risk of adverse health effects.

The TLV (Threshold Limit Value) for free silica is 0.025 mg/m3 as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) exposure. This limit is set by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) to protect workers from adverse health effects associated with breathing in airborne silica particles.
