Joseph John "J.J." Thomson (1856 - 1940) had a profound effect on our understanding of chemistry and physics, having discovered, it would seem, electrons and isotopes, and having invented the mass spectrometer. Without JJ the world would have been a darker place! However, doubtless others would have filled the void, there being much theorising and research being done by many scientists on such matters.
