CARBON
Organic compounds are defined by having (or not having - i.e. inorganic) carbon in it's structure. It is not necessarily the "building block", though. Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen - all are needed to get molecules to the point of being able to have carbon be a part of them to make that organism living (very 'lay-person' answer - not correct terminology). Just having Carbon does not make a living organism.
