The Roman emperor Constantine the Great ceased the persecution of the christian church that occurred before his reign. Constantine himself most likely converted to Christianity. However, he did very little on his own to spread the gospel and Christianity.

Once Christianity was accepted by the ruling class, beginning with Constantine, recognition of Christianity as the official religion was well underway.

Most believe that Constantine was exposed to the gospel by his mother. This would make good sense as she was a professing Christian.
