mostly they die. oxygen is highly reactive and creates free radicals which destroy cell membranes. by the way the very same process is killing us slowly day by day, cell by cell... take a breath :)

obligatet anaerobic bacteria will die if there exposed to oxygen for more than 10 hours

but there are bacteria that is primary anaerobic and secondary aerobic, and they will grow fast at anaerobic conditions and slow at aerobic conditions
