mostly they die. oxygen is highly reactive and creates free radicals which destroy cell membranes. by the way the very same process is killing us slowly day by day, cell by cell... take a breath :)

What is the opposite of Anaerobic?

The opposite of anaerobic is aerobic. Anaerobic processes occur without oxygen, while aerobic processes require oxygen.

What do you call an organism that does not require oxygen?

Anaerobic

What does it mean for organism to be an anaerobic?

It is poisoned by oxygen

What does it means for an organism to be anaerobic?

It is poisoned by oxygen

What are the characteristics of anaerobic species?

An anaerobic species is one that does not live in oxygen-rich settings. Anaerobic means that the organism does not need oxygen to live.

Is oxygen necessary for glycolysis?

No - glycolysis is anaerobic (it does occur in the presence of oxygen).

What is a anaerobically?

Anaerobically refers to a process or organism that operates without the presence of oxygen. This can occur in situations where oxygen is not available, such as in deep ocean environments or during intense exercise when muscles rely on anaerobic metabolism.

What happens if an organism performs cellular respiration without oxygen?

If an organism performs cellular respiration without oxygen, it undergoes anaerobic respiration. This process yields less ATP compared to aerobic respiration and produces lactic acid or ethanol as byproducts. Anaerobic respiration is less efficient because oxygen is not available to act as the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain.

What bacteria can survive without the presence of oxygen?

Archaebacteria called extremeophiles have some species that live entirely anaerobically. Bacteria [and other organisms] that respire using O2 as the 'final' electron acceptor are termed to be Aerobic, while bacteria [and the odd organism] that has the biochemical capacity to Live without O2 are termed to be Anaerobic.

What is an organism that grows with or without oxygen?

A facultative anaerobe is an organism that can grow in the presence or absence of oxygen. These organisms have metabolic flexibility and can switch between aerobic and anaerobic pathways depending on the environmental conditions. Examples include E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

What term describes bacteria that can survive without the presence of oxygen?

Anaerobic bacteria or facultative anaerobic bacteria.

In what situation does anaerobic respiration takes place?

When there is no oxygen, or the organism cannot use oxygen for respiration.
