Let's take a very simple chemical equation, the combination of hydrogen and oxygen to create water.

The equation for this is as follows:

2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O

In english, 2 molecules of hydrogen + 1 molecule of oxygen yields (->) 2 molecules of water.

The coefficient is the number 2 in front of the hydrogen molecule H2

In chemistry, the coefficient tells us "how many" of each molecule we're dealing with.
