A sarcomere is the basic structural and functional unit of skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue. It is defined as the segment between two neighboring Z-discs (or Z-lines) and contains overlapping thick (myosin) and thin (actin) filaments, which interact to produce muscle contraction. Sarcomeres are organized in a series along the length of a muscle fiber, contributing to the striated appearance of these muscle types. Their contraction is regulated by calcium ions and the protein troponin, among other factors.
