This is the dependent variable.

The independent variable is the one that the experimenter has control over; the dependent variable 'responds' to the independent variable, and there are other variables that are controlled to make it a fair test.

Example: An experimenter is generating freezing curves for water. Every 5 minutes, she takes the temperature of the water. The dependent variable will be the temperature, the independent variable is the time (she chose the 5-minute intervals), and control variables might be that the volume of water is kept the same in each trial, the freezing mechanism, or that the container material is kept the same.
