What is freathing?

I was listening to talk back radio this morning and "freathing"(?) was being talked about. Apparently it was practiced in the UK in the 1800's to "liven up" horses about to be sold. To achieve this a small eel was inserted into the horses rear end. Can anyone confirm this?
