Matter is made of atoms. An atom is composed of protons, neutrons and electrons.

Different types of matter have atoms with a different number of protons.

e.g. Hydrogen gas is 'matter', it has one(1) proton. however, Carbon (solid) is also 'matter', it has six(6) protons.

Water is also 'matter' it is a liquid compound and is composed of three atoms. Two atoms are hydrogen and one atom of oxygen. Each atom has hydrogen 1 proton and oxygen 8 protons. The atoms of water are combined through electron bonding.

The composition of an atom is protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus. The electrons are found in 'energy clouds' outside the nucleus.

The protons are deemed to have a mass of '1' and are positively(+) charged, neutrons are deemed to have a mass of '1' and have no (0) charge, electrons are deemed to have a mass of '1/1820' and have a negative(-) charge. The number of protons and electrons in an atom must be equal other wise the atom would have a charge, when it is known as an 'ion'. Physical Research into the nature of protons and neutrons has revealed even smaller particles ; quarks, mesons etc.,

Everything around us , including ourselves, is matter, and is composed of atoms, combined together to form 'complex' compounds.

Hope that helps!!!!

Is there a limit to how far matter can be subdivided?

Yes. Matter is all made up of atoms: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are made up of quarks, and electrons are made up of leptons. As far as we know so far, quarks and leptons are as far subdivided as it gets, but who knows what future science enquiries will bring.
