The air is about 80% nitrogen- but cannot be used by plants for food. Nitrogen fixing bacteria transform nitrogen in the air to nitrogen in the soil that plants CAN use- resulting in greatly improved plant growth, and more fertile soil.

Bacteria are decomposers that feed on dead plants or animals. The tissues of dead organisms are broken down into nitrogen- and carbon-containing molecules. The cycle of nature, is a cycle of energy. Bacteria, the Monera Kigdom in this aspect regenearte energy and re introduce dead organims energy into the system of nature's matrix.

nitrogen fixation takes place with the help of lightning , bacteria called rhizobium lives in the nodules of legumenous plants convert nitrogen into nitrogeous compounds , algae etc. also helps in nitrogen fixation

Bacteria return nitrogen to the soil by which process?

The role of bacteria in the Nitrogen Cycle is to perform biological nitrogen fixation. This process is an important part of the Nitrogen Cycle because it converts oxygen into ammonia that plants are then able to use.
