when there is competition
Natural selection occurs when four conditions are met: 1. There is variation among individuals. 2. That variation is at least partially heritable. 3. That variation is linked to differential reproductive success. 4. More individuals are born than can survive and reproduce.
A population will most likely evolve when there is a small population, mutations exists, natural selection may take place, nonrandom mating occurs, and/or gene flow may occur. Sexual selection, genetic drift, Gene flow, Mutation, and natural selection are five ways a population can evolve. Sexual selection is natural selection arising through preference by one sex for certain characteristics in individuals of the other sex. Genetic drift is variation in the relative frequency of different genotypes in a small population, owing to the chance disappearance of particular genes as individuals die or do not reproduce. Gene flow is the transfer of alleles or genes from one population to another. Mutation is the changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations, caused by the alteration of single base units in DNA, or the deletion, insertion, or rearrangement of larger sections of genes or chromosomes. Natural selection is the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. The theory of its action was first fully expounded by Charles Darwin and is now believed to be the main process that brings about evolution.
The process of natural selection has three main parts: variation, heredity, and differential reproductive success. These parts work together to drive evolutionary change in populations over time.

The four main theories of evolution are natural selection, genetic drift, gene flow, and mutations. Natural selection is the process by which beneficial traits become more common in a population. Genetic drift is the random fluctuation of allele frequencies in a population. Gene flow refers to the transfer of genes between populations. Mutations are the source of new genetic variation in a population.

Darwin's four main factors for his theory of evolution were variation, inheritance, selection, and time. Variation refers to the differences in traits among individuals in a population. Inheritance is the passing on of these traits from parent to offspring. Selection involves the process by which certain traits are favored in a given environment. Time is needed for these processes to occur over generations, leading to the gradual change in populations.
