The most basic premise of science is the belief that we exist in a rational universe.

By believing in a rational universe we empower ourselves to go forward with collecting evidence and then reasoning about that evidence to make tentative conclusions or hypotheses that can then be tested through experiments or further gathering of evidence. Eventually we are able to draw firm conclusions so as to make sense of the physical laws that govern our universe. Furthermore, for those that believe in a rational universe it is extremely troubling if ever the evidence does not seem to make sense, and this is a good thing because when a scientist comes across an oddity it drives their curiosity until they solve the puzzle. With each puzzle we solve we gain a better understanding of our universe.
