The mass of the penny can be measured in any unit, metric or 'customary'.
But when it comes time to write it down, remember it, or describe it to others,
the unit most convenient for any of those purposes is probably the 'gram'.

You can use any unit of mass you like.

The SI unit for measuring mass is Kg.

In this case I would suggest grams or ounces as they would give the least amount of zeros relative to a decimal point.
