Mitochondria are independent forms of life that live in symbiosis in the cells of ALL living things. [And thus form one of the definitions of a cell or of life.]

They respire, consume energy, and as a by-product produce the energy molecule ATP much more efficiently than we can do otherwise.

They are symbiotic, but there is no suggestion that they are altruistic.
