In very simple terms.... a cell is the smallest "living" unit. a cell, given the proper conditions is able to sustain itself and therefore is alive. Tissue on the other hand is made up of many cells that share a common function!

Example:

the lining of the nephron in the human kidney is comprised of simple cuboidal epithelia cells!
