Scientific dating attempts to assign a particular year to a particular item, or as close to a year as possible, for example 75 a.d. or 637 b.c. If it can not assign a year, it tries to assign an era such as the Cambrian era or the Jurassic period. Cultural dating places a piece of literature, philosophy, clothing, or tool in a particular period of time, although any of those could also be scientifically dated. If you are studying Elizabethan culture, you are studying a particular era where the styles and ideas did not change much. Still, It was quite a different era in England from that 20 years earlier or later.
