What is the difference between fruit and seed?

A Fruit is the means by which these plants disseminate seeds.

A seed is the fertilized, matured ovule of a flowering plant, containing an embryo or rudimentary plant.

So fruits contain one or more seeds and they are designed to be eaten by animals which then scatter the seeds in the fruit as part of the dung they produce, the seeds survive being eaten and grow into new plants fertilized by the dung.

From what I remember of my A-Level Biology:

A seed is the bit that turns unto another plant. Fruit is something that encases the seed, formed out to the walls of the stigma, and disperses the seed. For example, an apple is a fruit, the pips are the seed. Most plants want you to eat their fruit so that you transfer the seed to a location not close to the parent plant.

The seed is the object from which a new plant can grow, it contains all the beginning nutrients the seedling will need til it can make its own leaves and roots. It is also usually encased in a hard shell to prevent it from being destroyed and/or eaten. The fruit, however, is the food the plant uses to entice animals to eat the fruit and seeds, which will then be spread by that animal. The seeds can usually pass through the digestive tracts of the animal, and be spread after the animal eats it and moves on.
