Any compound with elements C,H,O are called organic compounds. SO Carbon helps make organic compounds. Examples of polymers that are made of these elements are Polysaccharides, Proteins (with N and sometimes s and p), Nucleic Acids (DNA, RNA), and although not a polysaccharide, Lipids (Fats, oils and waxes) Each of these biomacromolecules are important in Biology...if you know the important of these then you know the importance of Carbon...eg. Polysaccharides for energy, engergy storage, structural, Lipids for insulation, fat storage, water proofing, Proteins for Structure, hormones, enzymes, Nucleic Acids to code for the synthesis of Proteins and carrying on genetic information on to the next generation.. Hope that helped.
When it says 'life is carbon-based', it literally means just that. All forms of life are built off of the element Carbon, which is number 6 on the periodic table. All life is built off of carbon. Nothing can be considered life unless it has traces of carbon. For example, DNA is the base of human life, and carbon makes up most of the DNA, so when it says 'life is carbon-based', it means that all life depends on the element carbon, nicknamed 'the element of life'.

because air contains many gases like nitrogen, oxygen carbon dioxide and a few other gases like argon etc.

Carbon.
For example, carbon is the base of known life on our planet
It is important for the breakdown of materials
No. Anything considered "organic" in biology contains carbon, and ALL living things are carbon-based--they contain carbon.

There is great importance for continually advancing technology in the field of biology. The better the technology, the more things humans will learn and invent like better microscopes or a new species. We need advancing technology so we can discover that cure diseases and that will start in the field of biology.
