The term "genes" in science refers to gentetics. The genes are certain traits or characteristics passed down from parents to their offspring. There are dominant genes and recessive genes. Blue eyes are a gene passed down from parents and may be dominant or recessive depending entirely on the genetic code of the parents. To figure out genetics somewhat simply, a Punett square may be used. Let Bb represent the gene of blue eyes, with B being the dominant gene of blue eyes and b being the recessive gene of green eyes. Let's say that both parents have the gene code Bb. To make a Punett square, draw a square and divide it into four smaller squares. Arrange the following letters on the outside of the square like so.

B on the top edge of the top left square.

b on the top edge of the top right square.

B on the left edge of the top left square.

b on the left edge of the bottom left sqare.

Now that your square is set up, you can figure out the genetic possibilities by using the Punett square like a multiplication table.

The B on the top edge of the top left square and the B on the left edge of the top left square come together in that square to form the gene code BB.

The B on the top edge of the top left square and the b on the left edge of the bottom left square come together in that square to form the gene code Bb.

The b on the top edge of the top right square and the B on the left edge of the top left square come together in the top right square to form the gene code Bb.

The b on the top edge of the top right square and the b on the left edge of the bottom left square come together in the bottom right square to form the gene code bb.

Once all this data is taken in, we can conclude that the offspring of the two parents has a 75% chance of having blue eyes and a 25% chance of having green eyes. Going deeper into this, of the 75%, there is only a 25% chance that the offspring has the fully dominant gene of blue eyes. (BB)
