The niche is the set of physical conditions and biological interactions that an organism has in its natural habitat. The niche is multidimensional, meaning that it has multiple factors, so we don't just talk about an organism's niche in terms of where it lives, or what it does, or what type of food it eats, or what sorts of climate conditions it thrives in, etc., but instead, all of those factors (and more) are part of the organism's niche. G. E. Hutchinson, an early ecologist, defined it as an "n-dimensional hypervolume", to get at the issue of multiple dimensions (n-dimensional means that there are any number "n" possible factors; hypervolume refers to the "shape" the niche takes in n-dimensional space). This is a more advanced concept of niche, but it helps ecologists to understand a related concept of Gause's "Competitive Exclusion Principal". Another early ecologist, Georgy Gause postulated that two different species cannot share the same niche: one will always outcompete the other. This was difficult at first for ecologists to grasp, because it seemed like they could see two species sharing the same niche, when they described the niche based on only a few factors. However, Hutchinson's n-dimensional hypervolume idea demonstrated that two species could share MOST of the niches (the n-dimensional hypervolumes could overlap significantly in the n-dimensional niche-space), but as long as they were differentiated on one niche axis, or based on one factor, then they were considered to be in different niches, and could coexist.
