The commonest "small" unit is the millimetre - you may get a fractional value such as 0.94 mm (we don't have dimes here, so YMMV).

The next smallest is the micrometre, but most folks outside the science community don't have much of an intuitive grasp of its size.

The centimetre is also often used, as it's closer to the inch, but 0.094 cm is a bit of a mindwarp.
